This is particularly important when working with external partners and suppliers who work in a different CAD software, and require data be sent to them in their native format. Accuracy and data preservation is a key concern in CAD translation, and the more translation steps a file goes through, the greater the cumulative risk.

When to Use a CAD Translator:

3D PDF: When You Need to Reach Beyond Engineering

A 3D PDF embeds interactive 3D CAD geometry within a standard PDF document, viewable by anyone with a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. It’s an easily sharable, intuitive format that is recognized by less technical users, making 3D PDFs great for providing anyone with access to designs.  

3D PDFs offer many tools for exploring designs. Users can rotate the model, create section views, take measurements, select and isolate components, and navigate the assembly structure. The interactive, 3D visualization experience provides a far better understanding of the design screenshots ever can. 

3D PDFs also allow other files to be attached and shared alongside the CAD data, e.g. PowerPoint files, 2D drawings, and spreadsheet data can all be included, allowing for the creation of Technical Data Packages.

What is a Technical Data Package? 

A Technical Data Package (TDP) contains all the data and technical information required to fully define a product. They ensure downstream teams have everything they need for efficient processes. 

Crucially, 3D PDFs are incredibly secure. Beyond the built-in password protection and document expiry dates, your IP will be far safer by not having to share the entire original CAD file to someone else.

When the recipient needs data in their own software, a 3D PDF won't serve them. The format is built for broad reaching collaboration, often with non-technical users.
