Thomas Osowski Tom's Masters thesis consisted of developing a real-time environment that allowed users to interact with 3D STL objects via an integrated haptic, or force feedback, device. The software combined multiple SDKs to provide a real-time interactive system including OpenGl, SWIFT (a physics SDK from the University of North Carolina), and OpenHaptics Toolkit from SensAble. Notably, he attached a drilling device and attempted to use the environment as a rapid prototyping tool; you'll need to see it for yourself. A week-by-week update was blogged on http://hapticprogress.blogspot.com/. After finishing a Masters of Computer Science in Germany and taking time off learning to sail, Tom ended up spending the past few years working for Havok, known for their C++ physics SDK, providing developer support and feeling the pulse of the video game industry. He was given the opportunity to work as a part of their industry-acclaimed support team to collaborate directly with customers ranging from software engineers to CEOs. After a three month winemaking sabbatical, Tom was courted by Tech Soft 3D to take the Developer Support reins. Now he spends his time squashing bugs (in our patio garden of course), converting the storage room to a winery and brewery, and keeping the developers from climbing the I-beams. |
