PROGRAMMER'S TIP Join us for training!

HC_Reference_Geometry

Sometimes it’s useful to define geometry once
and use it in more than one segment. It’s possible
to use HC_Include_Segment to achieve this, but HC_Include_Segment is like having the geometry we’re interested in included in a subsegment. When including a segment, we also get all that segment’s attributes and subsegments.

If we want to include the geometry directly in the currently open segment, rather than include it in a subsegment, we can use HC_Reference_Geometry. HC_Reference_Geometry takes a geometry key or a segment key. If the key is geometry, the geometry will be brought directly into the currently open segment. If the key is a segment, all the geometry in that segment will be brought directly into the currently open segment. If the segment we’re referencing has subsegments, the subsegments are ignored. Referencing geometry is extremely fast and efficient.

Our static tree heuristic makes use of geometry references to reorganize the segment tree for optimal rendering while maintaining a minimal memory footprint. Using geometry references maximizes performance and minimizes memory utilization especially when using common geometry in many segments.
